Prince William has expressed his sorrow over the passing of former MI6 chief Sir Alex Younger, who recently succumbed to cancer at the age of 62. The Duke of Cambridge released a heartfelt statement through Kensington Palace’s social media channels, jointly managed with the Duchess of Cambridge, to offer his condolences and commend Younger’s remarkable 30-year tenure. Younger had led the Secret Intelligence Service, also known as MI6, from 2014 to 2020, following his entry into the service in 1991.
In his message, Prince William praised Sir Alex Younger for embodying the core values of the Secret Intelligence Service, including integrity, courage, and a steadfast dedication to safeguarding the nation and its citizens. The Duke described Younger as an outstanding public servant and conveyed his sympathies to Lady Younger and their family. Notably, in 2019, Prince William had engaged in a three-week stint with MI5, MI6, and GCHQ to gain insights into the operations of the UK’s security and intelligence agencies.
After the news of Sir Alex’s demise surfaced, Prime Minister Keir Starmer led the tributes, acknowledging Younger’s exemplary life and service as the head of MI6. Foreign Secretary Yvette Cooper also paid tribute to the late chief, highlighting his dedication, integrity, and significant contributions to national security. Blaise Metreweli, the current MI6 chief, mourned Younger’s passing, recognizing his commitment to public service and enhancing UK security.
Prior to assuming leadership at MI6, Sir Alex Younger had built a distinguished career with assignments across Europe, the Middle East, and Afghanistan, alongside his previous role as a British Army officer. During his tenure, he oversaw MI6’s counter-terrorism efforts and played a crucial role in security preparations for the London 2012 Olympics. Known for his candid remarks on James Bond, Younger’s leadership at MI6 tackled a range of security challenges, with his tenure extended to navigate the agency through the uncertainties of Brexit.
