Starmer Urges Unity After Meeting with Family of Murdered Teen

Date:

Keir Starmer expressed deep humility following a meeting with the family of murdered teenager Henry Nowak at Downing Street. He emphasized the importance of not exploiting the tragedy for divisive purposes, urging for unity and progress in Henry’s honor. Starmer met with Henry’s mother, father, and stepmother privately after public outrage over distressing bodycam footage showing the 18-year-old pleading with handcuffed police officers as he lay dying.

The Prime Minister, during the meeting, commended the family’s strength and dignity in the face of immense pain. He highlighted Henry’s positive qualities and the bright future ahead of him that was tragically cut short. Starmer pledged to ensure that lessons are learned from the case and prevent similar devastating losses for other families.

An investigation by the Independent Office for Police Conduct is underway to scrutinize Hampshire Police’s handling of Henry’s fatal stabbing. The released bodycam footage revealed a lack of belief from officers at the scene when Henry reported being stabbed. Following the incident, one officer resigned, and two others were removed from frontline duties. Additionally, eleven police officers sustained injuries in violent clashes in Southampton.

Starmer stressed the need for transparency and accountability in addressing the handling of Henry’s murder by the police. He reiterated the importance of choosing unity and progress while honoring Henry’s memory. The family spent nearly an hour discussing the case with the Prime Minister and also met with Tory leader Kemi Badenoch to emphasize the importance of not inciting anger or division in the community.

Vickrum Digwa, the perpetrator of Henry’s murder, received a minimum 21-year jail sentence. Henry’s sister shared heartfelt memories of her brother and expressed everlasting love and loss. Starmer cautioned against politicizing Henry’s case to fuel hatred, following accusations of exploitation by some political figures. He emphasized the family’s plea to avoid causing further tension and to prioritize healing and justice in the aftermath of the tragedy.
