The family of a graduate who was murdered 30 years ago revealed that the unsolved case has taken a toll on her mother, who now suffers from dementia and will never see justice. Melanie Hall, 25, disappeared after leaving a nightclub in Bath in June 1996. Her remains were discovered 13 years later near an M5 slip road in Thornbury, Gloucestershire, wrapped in rope and bin bags.
Ahead of the 30th anniversary of Melanie’s murder, her sister Dominique made a plea to catch the killer, highlighting the devastating impact on their mother, Pat, 81, who has been profoundly affected by the tragedy. Pat’s deteriorating health leaves it up to Dominique and their father, Steve, to seek justice for Melanie and their mother.
Steve expressed the profound effect the tragedy had on his wife, indicating that finding Melanie’s remains seemed to mark the end of his wife’s hope. The family’s grief has been a solitary journey, with Steve and Pat rarely discussing Melanie, often leading to arguments due to the inability to ease each other’s pain.
To commemorate the disappearance anniversary, Avon and Somerset Police initiated a “Justice for Melanie” campaign, urging potential witnesses to come forward with any information. The police have been actively investigating the case for 30 years under Operation Denmark, involving a large team of officers. Efforts to review evidence with modern technology and re-interview key witnesses have been ongoing.
Despite multiple arrests over the years, no one has been charged in connection to Melanie’s murder. Notably, convicted murderer Christopher Halliwell is among the persons of interest in the case. Halliwell is currently serving a life sentence for other crimes but remains a focus of the investigation into Melanie’s death.
Melanie, a psychology graduate, was last seen sitting alone in a nightclub before her disappearance. Her family remains hopeful that someone with crucial information will come forward, bringing closure to the case. Dominique encourages anyone with suspicions about a male individual in their life to consider the impact on her family and come forward with any relevant details.
As time passes, the family’s desire for answers and justice remains strong. Steve expressed a heartfelt wish to see the resolution of his daughter’s case in his lifetime. The family believes that holding Melanie’s killer accountable is the last act of justice they can achieve in her memory.
Anyone with information related to the case is urged to contact the Operation Denmark team or Crimestoppers anonymously.
