Ceasefire negotiations in the Middle East hit a standstill on Friday as Hezbollah rejected U.S.-mediated proposals while Israel continued its attacks on Lebanon.
Reports indicate that at least six individuals lost their lives in Israeli airstrikes today, with Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu affirming the ongoing conflict with Hezbollah in Lebanon and the decision not to withdraw troops.
Residents in nine different areas of southern Lebanon were instructed to evacuate by Israeli Defense Force soldiers present in the region.
Hezbollah has adamantly stated that no peace agreement will be reached with Israel unless all troops retreat beyond the border, defying any potential deal between the two nations.
Prime Minister Netanyahu reiterated the commitment to stay in Lebanon and vowed to eradicate Hezbollah installations, notably a vast underground ‘fortress’ complex.
He emphasized the need for security zones and strategic areas along the border to ensure lasting peace. Netanyahu also mentioned the occupation of a fortress near Metula, a town in Israel, surrounded by Lebanon on three sides.
Hezbollah leader Naim Qassem dismissed the U.S.-brokered ceasefire as a sham, insisting on Israel’s complete withdrawal from Lebanon. The casualties from Israeli strikes in Lebanon since March 2 have risen to 3,526, with Iran’s IRGC command demanding Israel’s exit from Lebanese territory for regional peace.
President Donald Trump’s statements regarding the situation further complicated efforts to reopen the Strait of Hormuz, crucial for global oil trade. Trump downplayed the deadlock between Lebanon and Israel, focusing on seizing Tehran’s enriched uranium.
While the U.S. announced an agreement between Lebanon and Israel for a ceasefire, Hezbollah was not involved in the negotiations. The ongoing clashes between Hezbollah militants and Israeli forces resulted in casualties on both sides, including an Israeli officer killed by a missile.
The conflict between Lebanese Hezbollah and Israel, both supported by Iran, has been ongoing since the Hamas incident on October 7, 2023, with no immediate resolution in sight.
