Experts refute Farage’s claim of “two-tier” policing

Date:

Experts have dismissed Nigel Farage’s assertion that white individuals are now subject to discriminatory “two-tier” policing, arguing that data indicates the contrary. The leader of Reform UK has faced criticism for his provocative comments following the tragic murder of Henry Nowak. His party has pledged to discard police race action plans, aimed at enhancing policing for Black communities, if it assumes power.

Justice Secretary David Lammy rejected the notion of a dual-level policing system in the UK, countering Farage’s claims. The US State Department, under Donald Trump, interjected into the dispute, characterizing two-tier policing as a symptom of “civilizational decline.”

Citing Ministry of Justice statistics, experts highlighted the overrepresentation of minority ethnic groups in the criminal justice system. A November report from the MOJ revealed that Black and other ethnic groups were more likely to be incarcerated compared to white offenders, with disparities observed in drug offense sentences.

According to Home Office data, the use of force against Black suspects was 3.3 times higher than that against white suspects in the period up to March 2025. Dr. Shabna Begum, CEO of the Runnymede Trust anti-racism organization, accused Farage of promoting false narratives, emphasizing the disproportionate harm experienced by people of color in interactions with law enforcement.

The MOJ data indicated that white defendants received shorter custodial sentences on average compared to Asian, Black, and mixed-race offenders. Furthermore, Black offenders served a larger portion of their original sentences compared to individuals from other ethnic backgrounds.

In a separate report from 2023, Inquest revealed that Black individuals were seven times more likely than White individuals to die following police contact. Farage’s claims about biased policing were denounced as dangerous by Samira Ali from Stand Up to Racism, who criticized the far-right’s use of such rhetoric.

Amidst public outrage over bodycam footage showing police dismissing Henry Nowak before his death, questions arose regarding the impact of anti-racism guidelines on police responses. Dr. Begum expressed concern about politicizing Nowak’s death to push a divisive narrative, emphasizing the need for evidence-based discussions on policing reform.

Mr. Lammy refuted the depiction of a two-tier policing system, emphasizing his positive interactions with law enforcement. The US State Department extended condolences to Nowak’s family and the UK, denouncing ideological conditioning and advocating for the rejection of two-tiered policing practices.
