“Mother’s Warning: Toddler Poisoned by Garden Plant”

Date:

A mother of four is cautioning fellow parents about the risks associated with a common garden plant, following an incident where her one-year-old daughter was poisoned while on a family outing.

During a visit to Attingham Park in Shropshire, Daisy Hall’s youngest daughter, Winnie, ingested a rhododendron while seated in her stroller. Daisy, aged 34, expressed, “I placed her back in the stroller, and on our walk, she must have grabbed one and started chewing on it.”

Upon realizing the situation, Daisy researched online and learned that the flower is highly toxic to humans. She promptly took Winnie to the hospital, where doctors administered activated charcoal mixed with water to prevent the absorption of the poison into her body.

The toddler underwent ECG monitoring and observation for six hours before being discharged. She was then monitored at home for an additional 24 hours. Rhododendrons contain grayanotoxins, toxins that can pose harm to humans and animals if ingested, with symptoms such as nausea, dizziness, vertigo, blurred vision, and vomiting.

Fortunately, Daisy, who had recently taken an interest in gardening, recognized the importance of identifying the plant. She consulted her mother, Debbie, aged 63 and a nurse, before contacting NHS 111 on their way to the hospital.

Daisy remarked, “If I had waited for an ambulance, she would have likely missed the charcoal administration window.” Upon arrival at the hospital, Winnie received prompt treatment with charcoal. Daisy explained, “Charcoal must be administered within an hour to prevent toxin absorption. It was a challenge to give her the charcoal, hence we ended up covered in black.”

Thankfully, Winnie fully recovered. Daisy shared, “She was perfectly fine.” Since recounting her ordeal online, Daisy’s warning has garnered over 7.1 million views.

She added, “Online individuals have mentioned that they wouldn’t have thought to check and that it has changed their approach to not just removing the plant from their child’s mouth but looking it up. People have been sharing information about other toxic plants, and everyone has been gaining knowledge from it.”
