A man who had previously saved a police officer’s life shortly before winning a £1 million prize in the EuroMillions lottery has passed away in a suspected hit-and-run incident while riding his bicycle. Anthony Canty, 39, had administered CPR to a police officer who suffered a heart attack on a bus in April 2020. Only a month later, he became a millionaire after winning the EuroMillions jackpot.
Following his lottery win, the police officer, who had recovered after spending five days in intensive care, had remarked to Anthony that “good karma happens to good people.” However, tragically, six years after his life-altering win, Anthony was fatally injured in a collision in Tiptree, Essex, while cycling early in the morning on May 21. Despite being rushed to the hospital, he succumbed to his injuries four days later.
An 18-year-old man was arrested on suspicion of causing serious injury by dangerous driving, driving under the influence of alcohol or drugs, and failing to stop at the scene. The investigation is ongoing.
Tributes have flooded social media for Anthony, with many describing him as a “true gentleman.” Messages of condolences and disbelief at his passing have been shared, with friends and acquaintances recalling his positive and kind-hearted nature.
Anthony, survived by his wife Katie and their two daughters, had won the £1 million EuroMillions prize on May 5, 2020. Initially thinking he had won £100,000, it was only after Katie confirmed their millionaire status that he realized the full extent of their win. The couple celebrated with champagne and expressed plans to purchase a new home and take their daughters to Disneyland.
Despite his newfound wealth, Anthony had expressed his intention to continue working. At the time of his death, he was employed at a local building materials supplier.
Essex Police have urged anyone with information about the fatal collision to come forward. They are specifically seeking details or footage of a black Ford KA that was in the vicinity around the time of the incident.
