Sainsbury’s recent decision to exclusively offer white-shell eggs under its own brand has sparked reactions from Morrisons and Waitrose. The UK’s leading supermarket chain made this move in line with its sustainability goals and aim to achieve net zero targets by 2035, citing that white eggs have a lower carbon footprint compared to brown eggs.
While Sainsbury’s justifies the switch to white eggs based on environmental benefits, Morrisons and Waitrose have confirmed that they will continue to stock brown eggs to provide customers with a choice. Both retailers emphasized the importance of offering options that align with customer preferences while also promoting sustainability practices.
Sainsbury’s shift towards white eggs is part of its broader strategy to reach net-zero emissions by 2035. The supermarket highlighted that eggs from white-feathered hens, which produce white eggs, are more environmentally friendly due to their longer laying lives and lower feed requirements, resulting in a reduced carbon footprint.
According to research by SAC Consulting, white eggs have been found to have a 12.7% lower carbon footprint compared to brown eggs. Sainsbury’s aims to achieve net zero emissions in its operations by 2035 and extend this goal to its entire supply chain by 2050.
A spokesperson from Sainsbury’s emphasized that white eggs offer the same taste and nutritional benefits as brown eggs but with lower carbon emissions and improved welfare for the hens. Similarly, a representative from Waitrose reiterated their commitment to high animal welfare standards and quality, stating their progress towards achieving net-zero emissions on UK farms by 2035 as a demonstration of their dedication to sustainability efforts.
