Peter Murrell’s gifts to Nicola Sturgeon, purchased with embezzled funds from the SNP, may not be confiscated unless the party takes action, according to experts. The former SNP chief executive, who was jailed for stealing £400,000 from party funds, reportedly spent around £60,000 on gifts for Mrs. Sturgeon, including high-end kitchenware and household items.
However, certain items excluded from Murrell’s legal charges cannot be seized without a new legal challenge, as legal analysts explained to The Times. These excluded items, part of a plea agreement, may only be recovered if the SNP pursues a separate civil action.
Murrell, who admitted to embezzling over £400,000 from the SNP between 2010 and 2022, is currently in custody. He is expected to offer full repayment to the party as part of his defense strategy during his upcoming sentencing at the High Court in Edinburgh, scheduled for June 23.
If his repayment offer is accepted, the presiding judge could impose a compensation order in addition to other penalties, potentially including a prison sentence. Murrell’s assets, frozen under the Proceeds of Crime Order, exceed the amount he embezzled from the SNP, including a motorhome, pension funds, and property jointly owned with Sturgeon.
John Scullion KC, Murrell’s legal representative, stated that the restrained assets indicate a potential repayment of the embezzled sum. The defense is aiming to persuade the court to consider the compensation offer in mitigation, with the possibility of a reduced sentence if the repayment is satisfactory.
