Spanish authorities have apprehended two British individuals in connection with a vicious attempted murder that left a British man paralyzed from the neck down. The suspected shooter was captured at Alicante airport while attempting to fly to Edinburgh, and a woman was also taken into custody at the same airport upon her arrival in Spain. Both suspects are believed to be associated with a violent criminal organization based in the UK.
The victim, a 27-year-old man, sustained life-altering injuries after being shot outside his residence in Santiago de la Ribera near the La Manga golf resort. He narrowly survived the attack thanks to prompt intervention by police officers who stemmed his bleeding at the scene. Although initial reports suggested he was left tetraplegic by a masked assailant who fled in a vehicle, this detail has not been officially confirmed by law enforcement.
Following a thorough investigation into the incident that occurred on November 18, 2024, the Civil Guard announced the arrests of the suspects. Among the items recovered from the burnt-out vehicle linked to the crime were the firearm used in the shooting, a magazine with ammunition, a balaclava, and gloves. British police have cooperated with Spanish authorities throughout the probe.
The arrests took place in April and May, but details were only recently disclosed by Spanish police. One suspect was apprehended at the airport in April, while the second suspect, a woman, was intercepted two weeks later at the same airport. The operation leading to their capture was named Operation Esbroya 24.
The victim, identified only as Aaron, was rushed to an intensive care unit at Virgen de La Arrixaca Hospital in Murcia after the attack. He underwent an extended hospital stay following the shooting, during which he was reported to have been shot multiple times, including in the back. Witnesses initially mistook the gunfire for fireworks before emergency services arrived at the scene.
Initially thought to be Ukrainian, investigators later confirmed that the victim was a British citizen. Reports indicated that prior to the attack, he had relocated from Torrevieja due to unspecified issues with a criminal group. Local sources suggested that the incident may have been a result of a vendetta, with the victim allegedly hiding in Santiago de la Ribera to evade threats from a Torrevieja mafia.
The community expressed shock over the incident, with local health workers highlighting the dangerous circumstances surrounding the victim. They indicated that the victim narrowly escaped fatal injuries and speculated about potential motives behind the attack.
