Mother Denied Boarding on easyJet Flight Over Passport Rule Error

Date:

A mother was denied boarding an easyJet flight with her family and faced a £700 loss due to a passport rule oversight. Bolaji Omisade, 35, experienced disappointment when she, her husband, and three sons were barred from their trip to Greece at London Gatwick Airport. The issue arose as her passport, though not expired, exceeded the 10-year validity limit for EU entry requirements, unbeknownst to her.

The regulation stipulates that UK passports must be issued within 10 years of the travel date for most European destinations post-Brexit. Bolaji, despite ensuring her passport’s validity, was unaware of this crucial detail. Consequently, she had to return home with her youngest child while her husband and two older sons proceeded to Greece.

To salvage the situation, Bolaji expedited a new passport through the premium service at His Majesty’s Passport Office in Newport, Wales. Despite the added expense of emergency passport fees, accommodation, travel, and rescheduled flights, the family managed to reunite in Greece, albeit with reduced vacation time.

Following this ordeal, Bolaji shared her story on social media, advocating for better communication of passport rules by airlines and booking platforms to prevent similar incidents. EasyJet offers guidance on passport regulations, emphasizing the importance of checking passport expiration and issue dates before travel to meet EU criteria.

This incident serves as a cautionary tale for travelers to stay informed about passport requirements to avoid disruptions during their journeys.
