Terror police have assumed control of an inquiry into a school stabbing incident that resulted in the arrest of a 14-year-old girl. However, authorities have clarified that the incident is not currently being treated as an act of terrorism. The reasons behind this decision are being investigated by The Mirror.
On Tuesday morning, a teacher and two students were stabbed at the Co-op Academy in Blackley, located in north Manchester. The 14-year-old girl was apprehended under the Mental Health Act on suspicion of assault. Following an evaluation by a mental health professional, she was taken into police custody.
In an update on Thursday evening, Counter Terrorism Policing North West announced that the 14-year-old schoolgirl has been charged with three counts of attempted murder. Despite Greater Manchester Police revealing that Counter Terrorism Policing is spearheading the investigation, they emphasized that the incident has not been labeled as a terrorist act.
The authorities stated that Counter Terrorism Policing North West has assumed control of the investigation following additional inquiries. Ongoing searches are being conducted by Greater Manchester Police, who mentioned that “counter terrorism detectives are maintaining an open approach regarding the motive behind the attack.”
Chief Superintendent David Meeney, the Manchester Commander, stated, “Our local detectives have been swiftly investigating this incident since the arrest of the schoolgirl suspect on Tuesday morning. She remains in custody in Manchester.”
He added, “Further information has come to light since our last update, which has been shared with Counter Terrorism Policing North West. I understand that this update may increase concerns within our local community regarding the events of Tuesday. However, there is no evidence suggesting any imminent threat, and local officers are actively present in the area. We are attentive and ready to respond, so please communicate any concerns to our officers.”
The heroic school teacher who sustained a neck injury while shielding students during the lockdown has been identified as Maysum Abdullah, 27.
