“Rugby Icon Kevin Sinfield to Receive Knighthood for MND Charity Work”

Date:

Rugby icon Kevin Sinfield, renowned for his career at Leeds Rhinos, is most celebrated for his exceptional charity work raising funds for Motor Neurone Disease. The 45-year-old is due to receive a knighthood in the upcoming King’s Birthday Honours for his dedicated efforts in memory of his late friend and teammate Rob Burrow, who fought against the disease.

Having amassed over £11 million for MND charities following Rob’s diagnosis in 2019, Kevin has been a driving force in supporting the cause. Born in Oldham in 1980, Kevin’s journey began at Saddleworth School where he excelled as head boy before embarking on his professional rugby career with Leeds. His bond with Rob, whom he first met as a teenager at a Rhinos squad session, spanned over 15 years of shared experiences both on and off the field.

Throughout his illustrious tenure at Leeds, Kevin clinched numerous accolades including seven Super League titles, two Challenge Cups, three World Club Challenges, and three League Leaders’ Shields. His international stints saw him represent England 29 times and Great Britain 14 times. Following his retirement from playing, Kevin transitioned to rugby union, serving as a defense coach for Leicester Tigers and the England national team.

In response to Rob’s MND diagnosis, Kevin embarked on a series of remarkable fundraising endeavors. Notably, in 2020, he completed seven marathons in seven days, surpassing his initial fundraising target to raise over £2 million. Subsequent challenges, including running 101 Miles in 24 Hours and covering 7 ultramarathons across various UK and Ireland cities, continued to raise substantial funds for the cause.

A poignant moment occurred when Kevin, alongside Rob, completed the Leeds Marathon in 2023, symbolizing their enduring friendship and shared determination. The duo was honored with CBEs in January 2024 by Prince William at Headingley Stadium. Tragically, Rob passed away five months later after bravely battling MND for over four years.

In memory of his dear friend, Kevin expressed his admiration for Rob’s resilience and spirit, vowing to continue being inspired by him. Currently, Kevin, a father of three, has announced his final challenge, The Grand Finale, involving a 30-mile daily run to all 12 English Super League grounds, culminating in a finish ahead of the Grand Final at Old Trafford on October 3.

Reflecting on his philanthropic journey, Kevin acknowledged the unwavering support of his team and the community, emphasizing the importance of continued efforts to find a cure for MND.
