“UK Defence Ministers Resign Over Funding Dispute”

Date:

Keir Starmer faces a significant setback as both Secretary of Defence John Healey and Armed Forces minister Al Carns resign from their positions. Healey’s departure has caused turmoil within the Ministry of Defence, leading to additional resignations from ministerial aides Pamela Nash and Rachel Hopkins.

The resignations were prompted by a funding dispute, with Healey accusing the Prime Minister of failing to challenge the Treasury’s reluctance to allocate necessary funds for national defense. The government is embroiled in a contentious debate over financing the overdue Defence Investment Plan (DIP).

Healey criticized the inadequacy of the plan, stating it falls short of essential defense requirements during perilous times. Carns, a former Royal Marine, echoed these sentiments in his resignation, denouncing insufficient defense funding and highlighting the government’s neglect in implementing the DIP promptly.

In a pointed letter to the Prime Minister, Carns emphasized the obligation to provide soldiers with necessary equipment and unwavering support, which he believed the government was failing to uphold. Following Healey’s resignation, Dan Jarvis, an Army veteran with extensive military service, has been appointed as the new Defence Secretary.
