Fernando Alonso is rumored to be considering a return to his former team, Alpine, amid ongoing struggles for form at Aston Martin. While Alonso had previously expressed his intention to finish his Formula 1 career with Aston Martin, speculation is rife at the Barcelona-Catalunya Grand Prix about a potential switch.
Alonso, who will turn 45 in July, has had three prior stints with the Enstone-based team. His most successful period was when he clinched consecutive drivers’ championships in 2005 and 2006 with Renault. There is growing speculation, reported by Motorsport.com, that Alonso could make a final comeback to Alpine under the management of Flavio Briatore, who has a strong bond with the Spanish driver.
However, such a move would entail leaving behind the ambassadorial role Alonso holds with Aston Martin. Despite the rocky start to the season for Aston Martin, with performance issues and a challenging engine partnership with Honda, Alonso managed to secure the team’s first point of the 2026 season in Monaco.
In contrast, Alpine has shown improvement this year after finishing last in the 2025 constructors’ championship. With Briatore back at the helm and the team powered by Mercedes engines, Alpine currently sits fifth as the leading midfield team in the 2026 season.
Alonso is in high spirits at the Barcelona circuit, a venue where he last tasted victory in 2013. However, with the circuit not set to feature on the 2027 race calendar, Alonso hinted that this could be his final Formula 1 race at Montmelo. He mentioned that he will make a decision on his future after the summer.
