Sky is set to launch a new feature called Real Time for Sky Glass and Sky Stream, aimed at reducing streaming delays for millions of Sky users. The timing coincides with the upcoming World Cup, addressing a common frustration among sports fans who experience significant latency compared to traditional broadcasts. Services like BBC iPlayer and ITVX often lag behind by up to 40 seconds, causing spoilers and disruptions in viewing experiences. Real Time was initially introduced for Premier League matches in 2024 and is now being expanded to include BBC and ITV coverage, making it available for major events like the World Cup.
According to Sky, the Real Time feature will bring live sports closer to real-time action by minimizing the delay between live events and what viewers see on their screens. Fans can activate Real Time during supported live sports broadcasts by selecting the option on screen, available on both Sky Glass and Sky Stream devices through an opt-in button or dedicated channels such as BBC One HD RT, ITV1 HD RT, and ITV4 HD RT.
Sky’s transition towards internet-based services like Sky Glass and Sky Stream marks a strategic shift away from the satellite-based Sky Q platform. These services operate over broadband, offering advantages like easy self-installation, regular software updates, and seamless integration with popular streaming platforms such as Netflix, Apple TV+, and Disney+.
