“Vekic Triumphs Over Raducanu in Queens Final”

Date:

Emma Raducanu faced a defeat by Donna Vekic at the Queens HSBC Championships final despite putting up a strong fight in the second set. The British player aimed for a memorable victory in front of her home fans but encountered a challenging start as her opponent, Vekic, dominated the first set 6-0. Although the second set was more competitive, Vekic ultimately clinched it in a tiebreak.

Ranked 42nd globally, Raducanu, the British number one, has not secured a title since her historic triumph at the US Open in 2021. Vekic, the champion, overcame another British player, Katie Boulter, in the semi-finals.

Raducanu had a flawless run to the final, triumphing over opponents like Iva Jovic, Kamilla Rakhimova, and Sorana Cirstea without dropping a set. Despite the loss, Raducanu remained positive, showcasing her skills in the second set as she prepares for Wimbledon in a few weeks. Expressing gratitude for the support, she mentioned, “It’s been an incredible week for me, making the final here, playing in my home city, in my home tournament.”

Vekic acknowledged the tough challenge Raducanu posed, especially after winning six consecutive games in the first set. She expressed her enjoyment of playing at the club and on the grass court. Reflecting on the match, she said, “Winning 6-0 [in a first set] is sometimes a curse in tennis. Emma really stepped up and played some amazing tennis.”

Raducanu’s impressive performances include reaching the fourth round at Wimbledon twice, marking her second-best result at a Grand Slam after her remarkable victory in New York. Despite a loss to World No. 1 Aryna Sabalenka last year, Raducanu’s talent continues to shine on the tennis court.
