England’s national soccer team interacted with young fans during their initial training session in Kansas just before a tornado struck the area. The team had to stay indoors due to a severe storm at their World Cup team hotel in Missouri.
Captain Harry Kane and the squad were watching a game when a tornado warning was issued for Kansas City. The US National Weather Service reported two tornado touchdowns, resulting in power outages for over 68,000 homes. England had been training under clear skies just two hours before the tornado hit.
Local Blind Sports Coordinator Leah Enright showcased Blind Soccer to middle and high school students. Additionally, a Unified Team, comprising players with and without intellectual disabilities, along with Ryogoku Soccer Academy players, met the England squad.
Subsequently, a powerful storm hit the area, prompting sirens to warn residents to seek shelter. The storm alert, reaching 2.2 million people in the Kansas City Metropolitan area, highlighted the danger of 80 mph winds and advised people to take cover.
England’s players followed safety protocols advised by the hotel staff due to the storm’s severity. The hotel, situated in ‘Tornado Alley,’ experienced power loss during the storm, affecting TV coverage briefly.
Despite the weather challenges, England players engaged with schoolchildren, signing autographs and taking selfies. Fans were cautioned about extreme heat for the upcoming game against Croatia. A significant number of supporters are expected to travel to Dallas for the match.
