A significant disruption occurred on a major UK motorway this morning due to a vehicle fire. The incident led to the closure of three lanes on the M1 between junction 33 for Sheffield and junction 34 for Meadowhall, causing delays.
According to the traffic monitoring system Inrix, a large vehicle fire was reported just after 8.10am, resulting in warnings of delays. The South Yorkshire Fire and Rescue Service confirmed that a heavy goods vehicle caught fire on the M1 northbound between junctions 33 and 34 at 7:58am. Fire crews from Parkway, Aston, and Rotherham stations responded to the scene, with no reported casualties. The fire was deemed accidental, and crews cleared the area by 9:27am.
Despite the reopening of three out of four lanes, National Highways advised drivers to anticipate delays near the affected area. Recovery operations following the vehicle fire caused initial lane closures, but only one lane remains shut as of the latest update.
