A police sergeant, Paul Street, is currently facing trial for alleged misconduct while serving at Cambridgeshire Constabulary. Accusations against Street include assaulting a suspect, mistreating a teenager in custody, and requesting inappropriate content from a female suspect’s phone. Street’s leadership style within his team, focusing on tackling serious crimes like county lines drug supply and organized crime, was described as “robust” but led to a “toxic” work environment as revealed through WhatsApp messages.
Street was reportedly leading a team at Cambourne Police Station, achieving notable success in combating serious crime. However, in 2021, anti-corruption officers intervened, seizing Street’s phones and discovering incriminating WhatsApp groups that exhibited a culture of boasting and disrespect toward suspects. The court was informed that Street fostered a hostile environment, showing zero tolerance towards dissent within his team.
One of the WhatsApp groups, called Impact Team, created in 2018 with 17 members, was later joined by a smaller group named Inner Circle. The Inner Circle group was used to share derogatory and inappropriate remarks about fellow officers, as detailed during the trial.
Allegations against Street included an incident where he reportedly assaulted a suspect named Samuel Kayode in 2020 and then shared a photo of the injured individual on the Impact Team group. Street’s behavior was further scrutinized when he allegedly requested intimate content from a female suspect’s phone, with a colleague sending him a compromising image.
During the court proceedings, it was revealed that Street’s actions led to a toxic work environment, where he set a negative tone for junior officers. Despite claims of unorthodox methods contributing to successful arrests, prosecutors argued that Street’s conduct was unacceptable, likening it to criminal behavior and a breach of public trust.
Street, hailing from Huntingdon, Cambridgeshire, has denied the charges against him, including assault and misconduct in public office. The trial at the Old Bailey is ongoing as further evidence is presented.
