Two adolescents are facing murder charges following the death of a 21-year-old man in a park due to a violent incident. The victim, Radwan Shakur, hailing from Wembley, north-west London, was discovered with stab wounds at Central Park in Chelmsford, as confirmed by Essex Police. Despite immediate medical attention, Mr. Shakur passed away at the scene.
Authorities have disclosed that an 18-year-old male and a 17-year-old individual, unnamed for legal purposes, have been arrested for the murder. Additionally, Romeo Mfinda, 18, residing in Widford Chase, Chelmsford, and a 17-year-old male from the same area, are also facing charges for possession with intent to distribute cannabis and carrying a knife in a public location. Both appeared in front of Chelmsford Magistrates’ Court on Monday.
During the court proceedings, Mfinda only verified his personal information and did not enter a plea. No bail application was made, and he was remanded to appear before Chelmsford Crown Court the following day. The 17-year-old, appearing separately before the magistrates, was remanded in youth detention accommodation pending a hearing at Chelmsford Crown Court.
In a statement conveyed through law enforcement, the family of the deceased, Mr. Shakur, expressed their profound grief, describing him as a beloved family member and a cherished individual known for his warm personality. They highlighted his bright smile and aspirations for a successful future, including attending university.
Essex Police reported that three teenagers aged 18, 17, and 14 were initially taken into custody on suspicion of murder. Following interrogation, the 18-year-old was released on bail, while the 14-year-old was released pending further investigation. Subsequent investigations led to the apprehension of another 18-year-old suspect on Sunday.
Detective Inspector Lydia George, leading the inquiry, characterized the incident as distressing and emphasized the community’s concern in Chelmsford. She extended sympathies to Radwan’s family, urging respect for their privacy during this challenging period. The investigation, driven by continuous efforts by detectives and specialized personnel, has made significant progress through CCTV analysis, witness interviews, and forensic examinations, culminating in the current charges. Authorities encourage anyone with pertinent information to come forward, stressing the critical role the public can play in aiding the investigation.
