A Lancashire apprentice bricklayer named Jay Slater went missing during his inaugural holiday overseas in Tenerife two years ago. After a night out, Jay woke up in an Airbnb, realizing he had missed the local bus back to his accommodation. He embarked on an 11-hour trek but soon contacted friends, mentioning his thirst and confusion before his phone died.
Despite extensive searches by Spanish authorities and his family, Jay’s body was discovered near a phone mast in a ravine within the Parque Rural de Teno nature reserve. Tragically, he had suffered fatal injuries from a heavy fall. Toxicology tests revealed the presence of cocaine, MDMA, alcohol, and ketamine in his system.
Former Detective Mark Williams-Thomas, who assisted Jay’s family during the search, highlighted the perilous terrain Jay navigated, emphasizing the lethal risks heightened by drug and alcohol influence. The search efforts, involving helicopters, drones, and volunteers, faced challenges due to the rugged landscape of Tenerife.
Jay’s body was found in a treacherous area that even experienced hikers avoid, reflecting the dangers of the region. Tenerife, a popular destination among Brits, boasts stunning landscapes but also harbors risks. Safety measures, including proper equipment and permits, are essential for navigating the rocky trails.
Accidents in Tenerife have not been limited to mountainous regions; coastal areas have also posed threats to visitors. Tragic incidents involving massive waves have claimed lives, emphasizing the importance of caution near the island’s shores.
In another unfortunate incident, a coach carrying tourists on La Gomera plunged into a ravine during a fatal crash, resulting in casualties and injuries. The crash underscored the perils of navigating challenging terrains in the Canary Islands, highlighting the need for vigilance and adherence to safety guidelines.
