A man is set to face court charges for allegedly committing arson at a memorial wall in Golders Green, located in north London. Ali Fallahi, a 45-year-old resident from Ilford, London, stands accused of initiating the suspected arson incident on April 27 at Limes Avenue.
Counter-terrorism authorities conducted an investigation leading to Fallahi’s scheduled appearance at Westminster Magistrates’ Court on Thursday, June 18. The allegation against Fallahi involves damaging a memorial cabinet of undisclosed value that belonged to Miga Rally, with the intent to destroy or damage the said property.
The memorial wall, constructed by the Miga Rally community group, serves as a tribute to purportedly deceased protesters from a crackdown in Iran in January. Additionally, a segment of the wall commemorates those who lost their lives in the Hamas attack during the Nova music festival in Israel, dated 2023.
The fire incident, which began around 12:15 am near the wall’s cabinet, was reported later that same day at approximately 7:30 pm. Fortunately, the Miga Rally community group swiftly noticed and extinguished the blaze before it could spread to the wall itself.
Following the event, Miga Rally issued a statement emphasizing the sanctity of the memorial wall as a place for peaceful remembrance and honoring the memories of the deceased, condemning any act of vandalism or disrespect towards the site.
The Metropolitan Police disclosed that Fallahi holds dual nationality as a British and Iranian citizen. Another individual, a 38-year-old woman, was also arrested in connection with the incident but was subsequently released without further action.
Commander Helen Flanagan, leading the counter-terrorism policing in London, expressed determination in bringing all responsible parties to justice regarding the series of arson attacks targeting the Jewish community and Iranian diaspora in the city. Flanagan urged the public to remain vigilant and report any suspicious activities to the authorities.
