“Architect Sentenced to Life for Gilgo Beach Murders”

Date:

An architect responsible for eight murders in the Gilgo Beach killings case has been sentenced to life in prison without the possibility of parole. Rex Heuermann, aged 62, who was taken into custody outside his Manhattan office in July 2023, committed the crimes between 1993 and 2010.

The victims’ remains were primarily discovered in marshland along Long Island’s south coast, particularly at Gilgo Beach. Initially denying involvement in the seven murders, Heuermann eventually changed his plea in April and confessed to causing the death of an eighth woman not named in the indictment.

The investigation into the Gilgo Beach killings commenced in 2010 after authorities found four sets of human remains along the beach. Through DNA analysis and other forensic evidence, investigators identified most of the victims, many of whom were sex workers. The bodies of Melissa Barthelemy, 24, Maureen Brainard-Barnes, 25, Amber Costello, 27, and Megan Waterman, 22, known as the Gilgo Four, were recovered at the beach.

Additionally, Jessica Taylor, 20, and Valerie Mack, 24, were found along Ocean Parkway, several miles west of Gilgo Beach. The remains of a seventh victim, Sandra Costilla, were located over 60 miles away in the Hamptons. Another victim, Karen Vergata, was identified in 2023, with her remains found on Fire Island in 1996 and near Gilgo Beach in 2011. Although Heuermann had not been charged with her murder, Vergata is presumed to have been 34 at the time of her disappearance.
