A former inmate has issued a stark warning that the perpetrator responsible for the tragic death of Preston Davey will face severe repercussions in prison due to being regarded as a highly undesirable type of prisoner.
Jamie Varley, 37, was recently convicted of the murder and sexual abuse of the 13-month-old child he had adopted with his partner, 32-year-old John McGowan-Fazakerley. Varley, a teacher, displayed shock and distress upon hearing the guilty verdict at Preston Crown Court, eventually collapsing in a state of extreme distress.
Tragically, Preston passed away at Blackpool Victoria Hospital in July 2023 after sustaining 40 severe injuries, both external and internal, during the time he was in the care of Varley and McGowan-Fazakerley at their residence in Blackpool.
In addition to the murder charge, Varley was found guilty of multiple serious offenses, including assault, cruelty to a child, grievous bodily harm, and various sexual offenses. McGowan-Fazakerley was also convicted for his role in allowing the child’s death and committing acts of cruelty and assault.
Following the upcoming sentencing by Mr. Justice Turner, an ex-convict, Rich Jones, who served time for drug-related offenses, expressed his belief that Varley would be targeted in prison due to the nature of his crimes. Jones highlighted the likelihood of Varley being placed in a high-security prison like HMP Wakefield, known for housing dangerous criminals.
Jones emphasized the high risk Varley faces in prison, citing the possibility of being attacked due to the severity of his offenses. Despite potential placement in a vulnerable prisoner unit, Jones stressed that Varley’s safety remains a significant concern due to the serious nature of his crimes.
Karen Tonge from the Crown Prosecution Service described the case as one of the most shocking and disturbing she has encountered. She condemned Varley and McGowan-Fazakerley for betraying their duty to care for Preston, leading to the tragic abuse suffered by the innocent child.
The heart-wrenching ordeal faced by Preston and the devastating impact on those who cared for him have left a lasting emotional toll. Tonge expressed sympathy for all affected by the horrendous events surrounding Preston’s short life.
