Iran’s lead negotiator has derided the recently signed peace deal as a significant failure on America’s part. The United States has made public the full contents of the Memorandum of Understanding before its execution later today.
The deal comprises an extension of the ceasefire, the reopening of the vital Strait of Hormuz, and aims to resolve the conflict within four months. The agreement was digitally signed and is now effective.
Both nations have a 60-day period to demonstrate their commitment to complying with the terms post the agreement’s signing. Despite this, Iran’s chief negotiator has labeled the agreement as a failure for the US.
Mohammad Bagher Ghalibaf, in response to the document release, stated on state television, “The pact reflects a failure on the part of the US. People will observe it and make their judgments.”
He reaffirmed that Tehran will impose fees on ships passing through the Strait of Hormuz after the initial 60-day fee-free period specified in the memorandum of understanding. The vice president is set to visit Switzerland this Friday to finalize the agreement with Iran, aiming to end the Middle East conflict.
President Trump, aged 80, will depart from the G7 summit and return to the US instead of staying in Europe. Doubts have been raised by critics regarding whether Vance has been positioned to shoulder responsibility in case the deal collapses.
During the summit in France, Trump was directly asked about the vice president’s involvement in the deal by a Fox News reporter. Responding humorously, Trump remarked, “I like that idea, sure,” triggering laughter in the room.
“If it succeeds, I’ll take credit. If it fails, I’ll blame JD,” Trump added jokingly. “Be cautious, JD. He might turn his plane around and leave,” he continued. As the conference concluded, Trump expressed approval of the concept.
Before the agreement details were disclosed, the vice president revealed that Qatari and Pakistani negotiators, who helped broker the deal, requested a delay in releasing the full text. Vance emphasized that despite misrepresentation, the deal is fundamentally beneficial for the American people.
He voiced support for the agreement, stating that if Iran meets criteria like halting terrorism funding and nuclear weapons pursuit, they can enjoy economic benefits and reintegration into the global economy.
