“Keir Starmer Backs The Mirror’s Water Safety Campaign”

Date:

Keir Starmer has expressed his support for The Mirror’s water safety initiative following a series of troubling water-related fatalities in recent weeks.

During the G7 summit, Keir Starmer extended his endorsement to The Mirror’s Save Lives for Sam campaign, emphasizing his concern over the tragic deaths, especially involving children during the recent heatwave. He empathized with the families affected by the losses, highlighting the impact on parents and the community.

The Mirror’s campaign urges immediate government action to prevent the annual deaths of 33 children in open water across the country. The call for action comes after 19 individuals, including children and adults, lost their lives in water-related incidents during a single week amid a record-breaking heatwave earlier this year.

Named after 16-year-old Sam Haycock, who tragically drowned at Ulley Reservoir, the campaign seeks to raise awareness and implement preventive measures to avoid further tragedies. The initiative advocates for mandatory water safety education in schools, installation of safety equipment around high-risk water bodies, and the appointment of a Minister for Water Safety in England.

Various organizations and public figures, including politicians like Lee Pitcher, have joined forces to support the campaign. The drive for ‘Sam’s Law’ and enhanced water safety measures has garnered widespread backing from the Prime Minister and stakeholders in the field of water safety.

The campaign also emphasizes the need for public awareness campaigns, lifesaving advice dissemination, and stringent legal measures to address water safety concerns effectively. With cross-party support and public backing, the push for comprehensive water safety regulations aims to prevent avoidable drownings and safeguard lives across the nation.
