A senior caregiver was caught on CCTV attempting to sexually assault an 85-year-old dementia patient in northern Lincolnshire. Malek Alshabi, who had a previous conviction for mistreating a 93-year-old patient, admitted to the attempted rape.
During the court proceedings at Grimsby Crown Court, Deputy Circuit Judge Timothy Clayson raised concerns about how Alshabi was able to work at a care home again. The victim, diagnosed with Alzheimer’s and dementia, was unaware of her surroundings and relied on assistance for daily tasks like eating and personal care.
Alshabi was arrested after the incident was detected by motion-sensor cameras in the care home. He denied any sexual activity during the police interview, citing fasting for Ramadan as a reason. Alshabi, a father of five with a history of criminal convictions, was found to be in breach of a suspended sentence for neglecting a 93-year-old patient in a previous case.
Defense attorney Tim Savage expressed Alshabi’s remorse and acknowledgment of betraying trust. The judge sentenced Alshabi to nine years in prison with an additional three years on license due to the perceived danger he posed. Alshabi is subject to a Sexual Harm Prevention Order and will be listed on the Sex Offender Register indefinitely.
Furthermore, Alshabi will be included in the Disclosure and Barring List, prohibiting him from working with vulnerable individuals or children in the future. The judge expressed concern over Alshabi’s ability to secure employment at another care home despite his previous convictions, emphasizing the need for further investigation into the matter.
