Ukraine has issued a warning to Belarus, threatening potential military action if Belarus does not dismantle relay equipment being used for Russian drone strikes against Ukrainian cities. President Volodymyr Zelensky has given Belarusian President Alexander Lukashenko, a close ally of Vladimir Putin, a deadline of seven days to remove the equipment. Zelensky emphasized the urgency of the situation, stating that Ukrainian civilians are suffering casualties daily due to the presence of this equipment.
If Belarus fails to comply, Ukraine’s proposed military action could escalate the conflict with Russia, which has been attempting to involve Belarus in the war. Zelensky has also urged Lukashenko to cease supplying petroleum products to Russian forces involved in the conflict, highlighting Belarus’s significant role in supporting Russian military operations.
Although Belarus has not officially engaged in the conflict with its own troops, it has played a crucial role as a military partner and rear base for Russia. The recent tensions were heightened by Ukraine’s SBU intelligence agency’s assertion that an attack on a Belarusian youth sports team bus in Russia was orchestrated by Russian special services, despite Russia’s claim that it was a drone strike by Ukraine. Zelensky dismissed Russia’s allegations as a false flag operation, emphasizing the need to thwart Russian attempts to draw Belarus further into the conflict.
Despite Lukashenko’s claim that Belarus is militarily vulnerable and his disapproval, along with Putin, of involving Belarus in the war, Zelensky remains firm in his stance against Belarus’s support for Russian military activities. The situation remains tense as Zelensky continues to issue warnings to Belarus, indicating a potential escalation in the ongoing conflict.
