A recent study examining the most challenging locations for raising children in 2026 has identified a northern city as the top-ranked due to its crime rate, which is double the national average. The rankings, conducted by Outdoor Toys, took into account factors such as green space availability, child-friendly attractions, childcare expenses, and school quality across various UK towns and cities. Each location was assigned a ‘child raiseability’ score on a scale of one to ten.
Manchester was rated as the least favorable place to raise children, scoring only 3.39 out of 10. Despite having a decent amount of green spaces and 18 child-friendly attractions, its high crime rate significantly impacted its ranking. With a crime rate of 145 incidents per 1,000 people, Manchester’s safety concerns outweighed its other positive aspects.
On the other hand, Bradford in West Yorkshire ranked second-lowest due to its combination of low childcare costs and a high crime rate of 121 incidents per 1,000 people. Additionally, the city lacked child-friendly attractions, contributing to its score of 3.62 out of ten. Bristol, although popular with families relocating from London, placed third from the bottom in the study primarily due to its exorbitant childcare costs.
Despite the financial burden of childcare expenses in Bristol, the city offers numerous family-friendly activities and ample green space. In contrast, Sheffield emerged as the best location for raising children, scoring well in green space availability, attractions, and school quality. Milton Keynes followed closely behind, praised for its abundance of family-friendly activities, while Swindon secured the third spot thanks to its low crime rate and below-average childcare costs.
