“Bag-Pooling: A Strategy for Heavy Packers or Necessity?”

Date:

Travelers often seek ways to reduce the items they bring on flights, yet many still prefer to pack generously for their vacations. This inclination is sometimes driven by necessity, such as when traveling with infants or carrying essential medical gear, resulting in heavier suitcases that may exceed standard weight limits.

Some groups of passengers resort to a practice known as bag-pooling, where the collective baggage allowance is distributed among multiple travelers. While this technique can be useful, it is crucial to note that airlines have specific policies regarding bag-pooling and impose strict weight limits on individual pieces of luggage.

These weight restrictions are not arbitrary; they are in place to ensure the safety of baggage handlers who have limits on the weight they can lift. Most airlines enforce a maximum weight limit of 32kg per bag or item checked in, with anything exceeding this threshold facing potential rejection at the check-in counter.

Various popular UK airlines outline their guidelines on weight limits and bag-pooling arrangements for passengers. For instance, easyJet permits travelers on the same booking to combine their weight allowances among multiple bags, provided no single item surpasses 32kg. Similarly, Jet2 allows luggage pooling as long as the total weight limit is not exceeded, and no individual bag exceeds 32kg.

TUI Airways facilitates luggage pooling among passengers on the same booking, but each bag must not weigh more than 25kg. However, travelers on TUI packages operated by third-party airlines should verify their specific luggage allowances directly with the operating carrier.

Ryanair also supports bag pooling within the same reservation, allowing passengers to share their total weight allowance. However, the airline strictly enforces a maximum weight limit of 32kg per bag.

For more information on airline-specific policies and luggage allowances, passengers are advised to consult their booking confirmation or contact the respective airlines directly.
