This announcement comes as Andy Burnham, the former Mayor of Greater Manchester and a leading contender for the leadership position, gears up to return to Westminster following his recent victory in the Makerfield by-election. Starmer has requested the National Executive Committee (NEC) of the Labour Party to establish a timeline for the election of the new party leader. Nominations for the leadership position are set to commence on July 9 and will close at the start of the summer recess on July 16.
Assuring a smooth transition of power, Starmer emphasized that he would continue as Prime Minister until the leadership contest concludes. Despite uncertainties surrounding a potential leadership race, Burnham’s supporters advocate for a seamless transfer of power to the former Mayor.
Should Burnham emerge uncontested, assuming the leadership mantle and the Prime Ministership by mid-July is plausible. However, this scenario hinges on the absence of other ambitious Labour MPs vying for the leadership role. Notably, former Health Secretary Wes Streeting promptly extended his support to Burnham, endorsing him as the preferred candidate for the top position.
Prospective leadership candidates must secure endorsements from 81 MPs, representing 20% of the Parliamentary Labour Party, along with meeting additional criteria such as union and local party nominations to qualify for the ballot. The election process typically involves nationwide hustings before ballot papers are distributed to party members, leading to a special conference to announce the winner.
In the event of an uncontested leadership transition, a coronation-style handover to Burnham could see him assume office by July 17. Conversely, in the case of a contested leadership race, a new Prime Minister is expected to be in place by September 1, coinciding with Parliament’s return post-summer recess.
