“UK Braces for 40C Heat Wave Disruptions & Compensation”

Date:

Extreme heat is set to cause disruptions this week following the issuance of a rare red heat health alert with concerns of temperatures reaching 40C. The UK Health Security Agency (UKHSA) has raised the red health warning for six regions in England, including the West Midlands, East Midlands, South East, South West, London, and the east of England, from 1am on Wednesday until 11pm on Thursday. Additionally, an amber health alert has been implemented for the North West, North East, and Yorkshire and the Humber during the same timeframe.

Travelers using trains are advised to anticipate delays and cancellations due to the extreme weather conditions, which can cause rail tracks to expand and deform. In case of delays, passengers are typically eligible for compensation if they arrive at their destination more than 15 minutes late. Refunds vary based on the duration of the delay, ranging from 25% for delays between 15 and 29 minutes, up to a full refund for delays exceeding an hour.

For individuals experiencing internet outages amidst the heatwave, compensation may be available if the issue is not promptly resolved. In such cases, if the service remains unresolved after two full working days, customers can expect compensation for each calendar day without service. Similarly, if an engineer misses a scheduled appointment or cancels with insufficient notice, compensation is provided per missed appointment.

The surge in energy demand during hot weather can lead to power outages, mainly due to increased usage of cooling devices like air conditioners and fans. In the event of a power cut lasting more than 12 hours and affecting fewer than 5,000 premises, affected individuals can claim £95 in compensation. Additional compensation of £45 is granted for each subsequent 12-hour period without power. For outages impacting more than 5,000 premises, compensation starts at £95 for outages exceeding 24 hours, with an additional £45 for every subsequent 12-hour period, up to a maximum of £390.

In cases of unexpected gas supply disruptions, individuals are entitled to at least £70 per day without gas. Similarly, interruptions in water supply due to emergencies necessitate compensation if the service is not restored within a specified timeframe. Water companies are expected to provide alternative water supplies, such as bottled water or tankers, if the interruption lasts more than 12 hours. However, compensation may not apply if the restoration is hindered by extreme heat conditions.
