“Security Experts Warn of Prime Day Scams”

Date:

Consumers gearing up for the upcoming Prime Day sales event need to be cautious to avoid falling victim to cybercriminals. Security experts are warning that scammers take advantage of major shopping events like Prime Day by using fake offers, phishing emails, and imitation websites to deceive individuals into disclosing personal information or payment details.

According to Check Point’s security team, there has been a significant increase in the number of new Amazon-related web domains registered globally in recent months. Particularly in April, there was a surge in the creation of new domains, which poses a higher risk as attackers can use this time to make malicious domains appear more legitimate before Prime Day.

Check Point discovered that approximately one in every 11 newly established Amazon-themed domains was either malicious or suspicious. The company noted that Prime Day scams are successful because they closely mimic regular shopping experiences, utilizing familiar branding, convincing checkout pages, delivery alerts, and creating a sense of urgency.

To avoid falling victim to fraud during Prime Day, shoppers are advised to verify website addresses carefully before entering any personal information. Scammers often create fake pages that closely resemble Amazon’s official site, so being vigilant is crucial. Additionally, it is recommended to refrain from clicking on links received via emails, text messages, or social media, and instead visit Amazon by directly typing the website address.

Warning signs of potential scams include unrealistically cheap deals, refund claims, or urgent offers that pressure individuals into hasty decisions. Furthermore, fake alerts about Prime accounts being suspended are common tactics used by scammers. It is advisable to verify such information directly through Amazon’s official website to avoid falling prey to these scams.

By following these safety measures, consumers can enjoy Prime Day without falling into the traps set by scammers. Prime Day is scheduled to take place from June 23 to June 26, and Express.co.uk will be providing coverage of the event’s biggest deals and offers.
