A devastating fire swept through a commercial establishment in India, resulting in the tragic loss of at least 14 lives. The incident occurred on Monday, June 23, at a building located in Lucknow, a city in northern India. Among the victims were predominantly students.
The fire engulfed the building, which accommodated a pet shop, veterinary clinic on the lower levels, and a study center, along with an animation studio on the upper floors. The exact cause of the blaze that caused this destruction was not immediately determined.
Brajesh Pathak, the Deputy Chief Minister of Uttar Pradesh, confirmed the recovery of 14 bodies from the site. Additionally, reports indicated that around 10 individuals were successfully rescued and transported to a nearby hospital for medical attention. Disturbing videos circulating on social media depicted desperate escape attempts, with people seen climbing out of shattered windows.
One particularly harrowing video captured a man falling from an upper floor while trying to flee. Fortunately, he survived the fall and was promptly hospitalized. Firefighters had to forcefully enter the building by breaching a rear wall due to dense smoke hindering rescue operations. Exhaust fans were utilized to dissipate the smoke as emergency teams combed through the premises in search of any remaining survivors.
This tragic incident follows a similar fire outbreak in April at the Rituraj Hotel in central Kolkata, where guests were seen struggling to evacuate the premises amid the chaos. Regrettably, 14 tourists lost their lives in the blaze. Fire incidents are alarmingly frequent in India, often attributed to non-compliance with building regulations and safety standards by both builders and residents.
Critics point out that cost-cutting measures compromise safety measures, with civic authorities being accused of neglect and indifference. In a grim reminder of the dangers posed by such incidents, in 2022, a massive fire claimed the lives of 27 individuals in a four-story commercial building in New Delhi, the capital city.
