Norway’s Queen Sonja has shared her thoughts following Crown Princess Mette-Marit’s recent lung transplant surgery. Mette-Marit, who is married to the King and Queen’s son, underwent the procedure last week after her husband revealed her deteriorating health. Dealing with pulmonary fibrosis since 2018, the Crown Princess was frequently seen using an oxygen mask during engagements earlier this year.
In a recent statement, the Norwegian Royal Family confirmed that the 52-year-old royal is recovering well post-surgery. Queen Sonja, during an engagement in Kristiansand, the sixth-largest city in Norway, expressed her joy regarding the successful outcome, calling it “fantastic.”
The Head of Thoracic Surgery at Oslo University Hospital, Arna Tiane, reported that the lung transplant has been successful, commending the team involved. Mette-Marit will continue her recovery at Rikshospitalet for the next few weeks for medication adjustments, treatment of any complications, and rehabilitation, as outlined by Are Holm, the head of the Pulmonology Department at the hospital.
A separate statement from Norway’s Royal Family conveyed gratitude for the supportive messages received and highlighted the significance of the successful surgery during this challenging period. Meanwhile, Mette-Marit’s son, 29-year-old Marius Borg Høiby, was sentenced to four years in prison for two counts of rape. Prior to his conviction, reports suggested his discreet visits to his mother at the hospital to avoid media attention.
