Amid the intense heatwave, bakery chain Greggs has temporarily shut down 11 of its stores on Wednesday and Thursday due to safety concerns.
The decision to close these stores, equipped with large ovens, was made to ensure the well-being of both customers and employees.
Staff from a London shop that was closed have been reassigned to other branches as they faced challenges working in the sweltering conditions without proper air conditioning.
The affected stores are located in Aldridge, Wolverhampton, Luton, Gosport, Trowbridge, Barnet, Marlborough, Wantage, Dudley, Northampton, and Leicester Square, London.
Greggs has been approached by the Mirror for a statement regarding the closures.
The extreme heatwave has led to widespread disruption in Britain, with over 1,000 schools closed for safety reasons and transportation services affected by the soaring temperatures.
The Met Office has extended the rare red warning for extreme heat to the south coast of England for Wednesday and Thursday, including cities like Brighton, Bognor Regis, Portsmouth, Southampton, Bournemouth, and Dorchester.
Another amber warning for heat has been issued for Friday in eastern and central England, indicating that the hot weather is expected to persist throughout the week.
The Met Office spokesperson, Grahame Madge, stated that further updates may be necessary as more information on the weather conditions becomes available.
Liberal Democrat MPs have urged the Government to open air-conditioned public buildings as “cool hubs” to provide relief for vulnerable individuals during the ongoing heatwave, suggesting places like gyms, leisure centers, and libraries as suitable options.
