The United States has conducted military strikes on Iran in response to a drone attack on a cargo ship in the Strait of Hormuz. The US Central Command (CENTCOM) stated that airstrikes targeted Iranian missile and drone storage facilities as well as coastal radar sites. These strikes were labeled as a robust reaction to the incident involving a vessel in the Strait of Hormuz.
According to the UK Maritime Trade Operations (UKMTO) center, a cargo ship was hit by an unidentified projectile southeast of Oman’s port of Dahit on Thursday. The vessel, flagged from Singapore as M/V Ever Lovely, was reportedly attacked by an Iranian one-way drone. No casualties were recorded in the assault.
CENTCOM condemned the Iranian forces for their “unjustifiable aggression” towards commercial shipping, which it claimed breached the ceasefire agreement. The command also criticized Iran’s actions for jeopardizing the freedom of navigation in the key international trade route where commerce is increasingly active.
The airstrikes were carried out shortly after President Trump hinted at a potential response to the drone attack. In response, the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) stated that they repelled a US assault on Sirik Island and warned of a swift and resolute counteraction at a time and place of their choosing. Iranian state television reported that a telecommunications tower in the Sirik area along the Strait of Hormuz was hit by two missiles.
