A 13-year-old boy, Hayden Jones-Powell, tragically lost his life after encountering difficulties while swimming in Meynell Lake, Leicestershire, to cool off post-school. Described as a delightful and affectionate soul by his family, Hayden’s body was retrieved from the lake by police divers without any suspicion of foul play. Leicestershire Police will compile a report for the coroner to determine the circumstances surrounding his death.
According to his family, Hayden had joined his friends at the lake for a refreshing dip after school. Fond of West Brom Albion, animals, and being a great companion, Hayden was unexpectedly taken away on June 25. The family has initiated a fundraiser to give him a fitting farewell.
The fundraiser has already amassed over £2,300 from more than 130 well-wishers who wish to honor Hayden’s memory. The family hopes to bid him a proper goodbye, acknowledging that although nothing can bring Hayden back, a heartfelt send-off may aid in the healing process.
The incident occurred amidst sweltering temperatures in the UK, with a red and amber warning issued for extreme heat across England and Wales. Leicestershire is under an amber warning until midnight, anticipating temperatures surpassing 30C and potentially peaking at 38C.
In a bid to combat the rising drowning incidents in England, The Mirror launched the “Save Lives for Sam” campaign, aiming to prevent the tragic loss of children’s lives due to drowning, which has been labeled an epidemic and national emergency. The UK recently witnessed a distressing toll of 19 fatalities in water-related incidents during a record-breaking heatwave from May 24 to May 31.
