“Wimbledon 2022 Starts with Surprises and Activist Protests”

Date:

The highly anticipated Wimbledon tournament has kicked off with some unexpected happenings. Enthusiastic fans were spotted camping overnight to secure a spot on the opening day of the prestigious tennis event, enjoying favorable 15C weather conditions. Additionally, outside the venue, activists from Save Wimbledon Park made a statement by dressing up as giant tennis balls to oppose the proposed expansion plans that include adding courts and seating on a former golf course.

In recent developments, top players, including Jannik Sinner and Aryna Sabalenka, have ended their media protest after discussions with All England Club officials. Meanwhile, Emma Raducanu has withdrawn from Wimbledon due to a stress fracture in her lower right leg. On a positive note, seven-time champion Novak Djokovic is set to start his campaign against Wu Yibing despite concerns about his fitness.

Fans can look forward to the return of the iconic Williams sisters, Serena and Venus, who have received a wild card entry into the doubles tournament. The tournament’s opening day saw campers in high spirits, with queuing being a vital part of the Wimbledon experience for many tennis aficionados.

The event will feature 128 players in the main draw for the first round, with equal representation of men and women. Notably, the schedule for the day is dedicated solely to the singles matches, as doubles matches will commence later in the week. Campaigners from Save Wimbledon Park are advocating against expansion plans that would involve constructing new tennis courts and an 8,000-seat stadium on historical grounds.

Wimbledon, founded in 1877, is renowned for its distinguished status as the most prestigious Grand Slam tournament. The event’s meticulous preparations include over 7,000 staff members and various amenities to cater to the needs of the spectators. The tournament’s rich heritage, all-white dress code, and traditional grass courts set it apart as a unique and elite sporting event.

The famous Wimbledon queue, a global attraction, is a well-organized process with fans receiving numbered and dated Queue Cards upon arrival. The queue system ensures fairness and order as fans pitch their tents before dawn, ready to purchase tickets and enter the grounds. Serena Williams, alongside her sister Venus, will make a much-anticipated return to Wimbledon, participating in both doubles and singles matches. Center Court, with a capacity of 14,979, will host the most significant matches, emphasizing a strict silence rule to maintain player focus during gameplay.
