Two sisters were seen smiling as they were taken into custody by the police following the brutal killing of a mother of five. Amaya Cookie Diaz, aged 19, and Kitty Mia Diaz, aged 21, were apprehended in Del Rio, Texas, shortly after allegedly stabbing Caroline Peña to death in public. Video footage captured Kitty grinning as she was escorted by officers to a police vehicle. Amaya was also observed laughing and telling a camera to stop recording.
Another individual, Kyandra Renee Faz, aged 21, was also arrested in connection with the murder, according to the Del Rio Police Department. The incident occurred on June 25, 2026, at around 2:10 p.m., when the police were alerted to a female victim with multiple stab wounds at Val Verde Regional Medical Center. The assault was determined to have taken place on East 10th Street, and the victim was rushed to a medical facility in San Antonio for urgent care due to the severity of her injuries.
The motive behind the killing has not yet been disclosed publicly. Investigators are reviewing surveillance footage and interviewing witnesses. By 4:00 p.m. that day, both Kitty Mia Diaz and Amaya Cookie Diaz were apprehended by the police without any issues. Shortly after, Kyandra Renee Faz was also arrested in connection with the investigation. The three suspects were then taken to the Del Rio Police Department for processing and booking.
Later that evening, it was reported that the victim had succumbed to her injuries and passed away. Following her death, Faz and the Diaz sisters were charged with murder. They are currently being held at the GEO Correctional Facility awaiting court proceedings. Independent journalist Michael Elizondo recounted being at the Diaz sisters’ residence upon hearing about police activity in the area.
Elizondo described witnessing the sisters’ demeanor, noting that one of them appeared cheerful and carefree despite the circumstances. He mentioned the unusual behavior of one sister sticking out her tongue and goofing off during the arrest process.
