“Wimbledon VIPs Discouraged from Watching World Cup”

Date:

Wimbledon’s top official has stated that VIPs in the royal box will be discouraged from watching the World Cup. Among the notable individuals expected in the prestigious royal enclosure today is former England football star David Beckham, who has recently been attending matches in the US. However, football games, including England’s match against DR Congo, will not be displayed on the screens.

Sally Bolton OBE, the Chief Executive of the All England Lawn Tennis Club, confirmed that football matches will not be broadcast on the big screens across the grounds. Despite this, spectators are allowed to follow the games on their mobile phones, as the club does not restrict personal viewing.

Regarding the early closure of Wimbledon’s famous queue due to high demand, Bolton mentioned that over 10,000 people were in line by 8:30 am, prompting officials to advise against further travel to join the queue. She highlighted the changing dynamics of travel, with fans arriving earlier using various transportation methods, such as rental bikes, to secure their place in the queue ahead of schedule.

Responding to concerns about the increasing popularity of the queue system, Bolton emphasized the club’s commitment to maintaining accessibility for fans willing to wait in line for tickets. She acknowledged the growing interest in the queue, attributing it to factors like the availability of alternate transportation modes and early arrivals by fans.

Additionally, visitors at Wimbledon are coping with the warm weather by purchasing official handheld fans priced at £20. Various beverages are also available, with a themed Strawberries & Cream pint of Stella priced at over £9, alongside other alcoholic and non-alcoholic drink options. Champagne options include mini bottles of Lanson Le Rose, with prices higher than the previous year.

For wine enthusiasts, a variety of wines are offered at different price points, while refreshments like Evian water, soft drinks, and alcoholic beverages are available throughout the grounds. Food options include strawberries and cream, plant-based sausages, and other culinary choices for spectators.

Meanwhile, a demonstration involving around 100 people wearing giant ears protested against the proposed expansion of the All England Club in Wimbledon Park. Additionally, a player protest aimed at demanding increased prize money was called off following discussions with Wimbledon officials.

As Wimbledon continues to attract crowds with exciting matches and favorable weather conditions, attendees are enjoying the diverse offerings available at the tournament grounds.
