“Prince William’s Homewards Project Sees £7 Million Boost”

Date:

Prince William commemorated the third anniversary of his initiative to combat homelessness by revealing over £7 million in fresh funding. The Prince emphasized the need to elevate his Homewards project to new levels in the ongoing battle against homelessness. Over the past year, the project has channeled £1.9 million into six UK locations, with an additional £3.5 million secured through grants and private donations.

In a bid to prevent homelessness, new partnerships have been formed, including a £2.3 million collaboration with The Multibank, DfS, Bosch Home Appliances, IKEA, and B&Q to aid individuals in establishing and maintaining tenancies. The total injection of new funds amounts to £7.7 million.

These financial commitments complement the £50 million contribution made last year by Lloyds Bank to facilitate new lending for housing support organizations. At a special event, Prince William urged Homewards to expand its reach, emphasizing the importance of demonstrating successful strategies from the existing six locations across the entire nation.

The Prince also highlighted the significance of addressing systemic failures that contribute to homelessness and stressed the potential of systems in preventing such issues. William, aged 44, initiated the ambitious five-year Homewards project with the goal of eliminating homelessness in all its forms. The focus for the next two years will be on scaling up effective solutions to create a replicable model applicable nationwide and globally.

The primary objective is to transition more individuals into stable housing, employment, and early support interventions to make homelessness a rare, brief, and non-recurring phenomenon. With over half of the five-year mission completed, Homewards has impacted more than 2,400 individuals through educational and community initiatives, facilitated over 250 employments, and assisted 73 families in securing stable residences.

The campaign holds personal significance for William, who draws inspiration from his early experiences visiting shelters with his late mother, Princess Diana. Through pilot programs in six flagship locations, Homewards is actively working to provide stable housing, employment opportunities, and collaborative systems for early identification of risks.

Efforts are underway to attract sustained funding for prevention strategies beyond the project’s duration. During an event in London, Prince William emphasized the collective responsibility in tackling homelessness and the importance of embedding prevention measures across society.

Dr. Peter Mackie, Executive Director of the Institute of Global Homelessness, and a member of the Homewards National Expert Panel, highlighted the international consensus on preventing homelessness through enhanced systemic collaboration. He stressed the significance of combining data, lived experiences, and cross-sector actions to mitigate risks and intervene proactively.

Hazel Destiny, Executive Director of Homelessness at The Royal Foundation, acknowledged the tangible progress made by Homewards in its mission to prevent homelessness at scale. She emphasized the ongoing efforts to implement effective strategies and ensure sustainable, long-term changes.

In response to Prince William’s persistent query on the long-term impact of their work, Ms. Destiny described their discussions as dynamic and purpose-driven. She emphasized the importance of shifting societal norms, fostering collaboration, and instilling optimism for sustained, widespread change.

As Homewards progresses into its fourth year, Prince William continues to visit project locations to underscore the initiative’s objectives. Notable supporters of the campaign include former Lioness Fara Williams, TV personality Gail Porter, Aston Villa footballer Tyrone Mings, Spice Girl Geri Horner, Opera star Sir Bryn Terfel, and broadcaster Sara Cox.
