Food prices stabilize amid inflation fears

Date:

Food prices are on the rise, causing concern for many families, according to the CEO of the supermarket chain Sainsbury’s. Simon Roberts stated that while there are worries about food inflation, the impact has not been as severe as anticipated, especially for fresh produce. This trend is expected to become clearer by late summer.

These remarks follow initial fears of a surge in food prices due to the Middle East conflict, which affected energy and fertilizer costs. Despite earlier projections by the Institute of Grocery Distribution (IGD) of an 8% inflation rate by June, the actual figures showed a decrease to 2.2% in May from 3.7% in April.

The latest predictions now suggest that the peak in food prices may not be as extreme as initially feared, with the IGD revising their estimate to a 5.5% inflation rate later this year. Households with children may still face an additional expense of around £203 for food and beverages in 2021.

Inflation rates remained steady at 2.8% in May, contrary to expectations of a rise to 3%. Higher transport costs were balanced by a decrease in food price hikes, according to the Office for National Statistics.

Despite concerns about the cost of living, Sainsbury’s CEO Mr. Roberts noted a boost in consumer sentiment due to the recent heatwave and the start of the World Cup. Sales of pizza and ice cream hit record levels during the heatwave, with further growth anticipated as hot weather returns.

Mr. Roberts also urged potential Prime Minister Andy Burnham to implement policies that support business growth and consumer confidence. Sainsbury’s reported a positive start to the financial year, with total retail sales, excluding fuel, increasing by 2.7% to £9.15 billion in the 16 weeks ending June 20, compared to the same period last year.

The growth was driven by an increase in the grocery division, while general merchandise and the Argos business experienced declines.
