“Drug Crimes Soar: Liverpool Tops List with 7,770 Offenses”

Date:

Drug-related criminal activities have surged nationwide, as per the latest data indicating the specific regions facing significant challenges. While most crime categories have seen a decline over the past year, drug offenses have spiked by 18%, totaling over 230,000 incidents involving drug trafficking or distribution, often associated with criminal organizations. According to Home Office statistics, urban areas, particularly in the North, report the highest prevalence of drug-related crimes.

Certain locations exhibit alarming rates of over 20 drug-related crimes daily, including violent incidents linked to gang activities and drug-related homicides. In Liverpool, law enforcement recorded 7,770 drug offenses in 2025, marking a 19% rise from the previous year. Merseyside Police attributes this increase to intensified efforts targeting criminal gangs, making it the region with the highest number of drug crimes in England and Wales, translating to more than 20 offenses daily or one every 68 minutes.

Recent incidents in Liverpool, such as shootings in the Toxteth area and the tragic killing of Ellis Cox due to a turf war between rival drug gangs, underscore the severity of the situation. Apart from Liverpool, Manchester, Birmingham, and Leeds also saw increases in drug crimes, with Manchester reporting a 31% surge, Birmingham a 23% rise, and Leeds a 7% increase.

The prevalence of drug offenses in Liverpool stands out with 15 drug crimes per 1,000 residents, followed by Westminster with 13 offenses per 1,000 residents. Manchester, Islington, and Knowsley each reported nine drug crimes per 1,000 residents. The impact of such high drug crime levels extends to other criminal activities, especially violence and intimidation during turf conflicts among rival groups.

In response, law enforcement authorities have intensified efforts to combat drug-related crimes, focusing on dismantling “county lines” gangs and disrupting drug supply chains. The “Clear Hold Build” initiative, aimed at addressing serious organized crime through collaborative efforts, has been implemented nationally since 2024. Notably, recent updates from the National Police Chiefs Council indicate significant progress, with numerous arrests, charges, and convictions related to drug offenses.

Deputy Chief Constable Gunney, the National Serious Organized Crime lead, emphasized the importance of connecting specialist officers with local teams to tackle escalating criminal behaviors effectively. The success of such strategies demonstrates the positive impact of coordinated efforts in combating organized crime and improving community safety. Law enforcement continues to face challenges in this area, but initiatives like “Clear Hold Build” show promising results in transforming lives and enhancing public security.
