TikTok UK has stepped up to support water safety initiatives that could potentially save lives for years to come. The social media platform has pledged a generous £400,000 in advertising credit to aid the Royal National Lifeboat Institution (RNLI) and the Royal Life Saving Society UK (RLSS UK) in reaching out to young individuals with crucial water safety information before the summer season.
Simon Haycock, a father who tragically lost his 16-year-old son to drowning, hailed TikTok’s contribution as a significant advancement. Simon, who spearheads the Mirror’s ‘Save Lives for Sam’ water safety campaign, revealed that the initiative was inspired by his personal experience and the need to prevent further tragedies.
Following a distressing week in May where 19 lives were lost to drowning, with an additional seven fatalities during a recent heatwave in June, the Mirror campaign was launched to raise awareness and promote water safety measures.
In collaboration with TikTok, the RNLI plans to disseminate practical advice on coastal safety, emphasizing the importance of choosing lifeguarded beaches, swimming within designated areas, and understanding the risks of cold water shock. Additionally, essential lifesaving instructions such as “Float to Live” and “phone, float, throw” will be promoted to educate individuals on how to react in emergencies.
Moreover, RLSS UK will leverage the partnership to advocate for its ‘Speak up. Be A Mate’ campaign, encouraging young people to speak out when they notice risky behaviors around water.
TikTok expressed its commitment to providing accessible and reliable water safety guidance to a broader audience, particularly teenagers and young adults. The platform aims to utilize its reach and influence to make critical safety messages easily understandable and relevant.
Through this collaboration, TikTok, RNLI, and RLSS UK aspire to engage with young individuals effectively, equipping them with essential knowledge to stay safe around open water. The initiative is designed to empower individuals to make informed decisions, mitigate risks, and respond appropriately in water-related emergencies.
With a focus on addressing the heightened risk of drowning among young people, especially during hot weather conditions, the partnership endeavors to instill a culture of safety consciousness and responsible behavior around water bodies. Ultimately, the joint efforts of TikTok, RNLI, and RLSS UK aim to mitigate water-related incidents and safeguard lives throughout the summer and beyond.
