Firefighters rushed to a significant blaze near a Marks & Spencer store in Somerset this evening. Local residents were advised to keep their doors and windows shut as smoke filled the air.
The Devon and Somerset Fire and Rescue Service deployed ten fire engines and other equipment to combat the fire at an abandoned building on Kingsway this afternoon. Fire crews from various stations in the region, including Clyst St George, Taunton, Street, Wellington, Yeovil, Castle Cary, Frome, Martock, Shepton Mallet, and Wells, were dispatched following reports before 3pm.
Images captured the three-story warehouse engulfed in flames as firefighters worked to bring the situation under control, as reported by Somerset Live. The fire service confirmed that multiple pumping appliances and special equipment were at the scene, using three main jets to tackle the blaze. Due to the building’s structural instability, cordons were set up, and residents nearby were urged to keep their windows and doors closed due to the smoke.
An update just before 5pm mentioned the mobilization of two water carriers and two aerial ladder platforms to the site. Additional support was coming from neighboring fire and rescue services in Avon, Dorset, and Wiltshire.
