Dog owners are advised to get in touch with their veterinarian if they have fed their dog a popular brand of dog food following an urgent recall notice issued for the product.
Mars Petcare has announced a recall for two batches of its PEDIGREE® Can High Protein Chopped Chicken & Duck flavored dog food. According to Mars, the recalled dog food failed to meet its strict safety and quality standards. It has been discovered that the two batches of dog food may contain pieces of metal, plastic, and other foreign materials.
A spokesperson from Mars stated: “Despite undergoing a thorough quality control process, these two lots of PEDIGREE products were sent to a third-party vendor for disposal. However, it was later found that the product was illicitly redirected and sold in the US market.”
“The possible presence of sharp metal and plastic foreign objects in the cans poses a danger to your dog. Potential health risks for dogs consuming sharp foreign items include choking, lacerations, or blockages in the digestive system.”
Consumers who fed their dog the recalled product and are worried should reach out to their vet.
Mars Petcare US is collaborating with authorities to determine how the canned goods entered the market despite being deemed unsuitable for sale.
The spokesperson added: “Our priority is safeguarding pets and assisting consumers in identifying and removing the affected products from use. To date, we have not received any reports of pet illness or injury related to this issue.”
**How to Identify Affected Product**
This recall pertains ONLY to the two specified lot codes of the product sold in the US.
Those who have purchased the canned dog food are advised not to feed it to their pets and can contact PEDIGREE for a replacement product.
No other PEDIGREE or Mars Petcare US, Inc. products are part of the recall or affected by the recall notice issued by the US Food and Drug Administration.
