“Life Sentences for Murder of British Botanists in SA”

Date:

Three individuals who were responsible for the murder of two renowned British horticulturalists in South Africa have been sentenced to life imprisonment. Rachel Saunders, 64, and Rodney Saunders, 73, were abducted in Ngoye Forest, robbed, and subsequently killed in February 2018, shortly after participating in a BBC Gardeners World TV program. Their bodies were discovered a few days later in a river inhabited by crocodiles.

The victims, both botanists, had journeyed to the area to gather indigenous plants and seeds. Saffydeen Aslam del Vecchio, 46, his spouse Fatima Patel, 35, and Ahmad Mussa from Malawi were given two life sentences each for their involvement in the murders following their conviction in June. The sentencing occurred at the KwaZulu-Natal Local Division of the High Court in Durban, South Africa.

The esteemed wild-flower experts had spent time filming a documentary with TV host Nick Bailey, departing from the film crew in the Drakensberg Mountains to explore a remote forest for rare gladioli flowers. Tragically, just two days later, the British botanists were brutally attacked and killed by the ISIS-linked group.
