A 19-year-old teenager has been sentenced to life in prison, with a minimum term of 17 years, for intentionally driving into and killing a mother of three outside a bar. Kian Bateman, who was under the influence of nitrous oxide, also known as laughing gas, struck Shelley Davies, 38, during a confrontation outside a venue in Cardiff.
Following a trial at Cardiff Crown Court, Bateman was found guilty of murder and causing grievous bodily harm to Davies’ partner, David Bratcher. The incident occurred after Bateman attended a music event with friends at a club and later returned to the venue where a dispute escalated.
Witnesses reported that Bateman used his car as a weapon, running over Davies and injuring Bratcher. Despite the tragic outcome, Bateman did not stop but fled the scene, turning himself in the following day. Davies succumbed to her injuries in the hospital weeks later.
During the court proceedings, it was revealed that Bateman admitted to causing death and injury by dangerous driving. The judge acknowledged that while Bateman did not intend to harm Davies, his actions led to her death as he targeted Bratcher with his vehicle.
Described as a vibrant individual by her family, Davies worked as a healer for those battling addiction. Bratcher expressed profound loss over his partner’s sudden and violent death, highlighting the impact on their family.
Bateman, who demonstrated remorse and had no prior criminal record, received a lengthy prison sentence and a driving ban. The prosecution emphasized that the deliberate use of the car as a weapon had devastating consequences, resulting in the loss of life and injuries to others.
Detective Superintendent Mark O’Shea of South Wales Police extended condolences to Davies’ family and commended the community and witnesses for their assistance in the investigation. The tragic incident has left a lasting impact on those involved.
